At the beginning of week two of our Go Wales Heritage Skills placement, we worked on the Richard Burton Archive website, where we suggested changes to its layout that could make it more user-friendly. Our web guide on World War One went live, providing an insight into how the war affected the lives of the St. David’s parish congregation.

Throughout the week we listed the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation papers, and found that not only did the union represent its members on improving working conditions, they also gave members a voice at tribunal hearings. It became evident that the ISTC union was far more encompassing than we first believed, and had long-standing affiliations with other unions. The papers we have examined include correspondence, circulars, medical tribunal appeals, minutes, branch indexes, and audit reports, amongst many others.

Mid-week we went on a field trip to Glamorgan Archives in Cardiff. We were given a tour by the conservator, where we learnt about the conditions needed to maintain their purpose-built archive. We were also able to observe conservation first-hand through the work of the volunteers and staff in their conservation studio. We particularly enjoyed this trip because it showed us a different side to the world of heritage, and the staff with their specialist knowledge of conservation were able to give us an introduction into this interesting discipline.

We would like to thank all the staff at the Richard Burton Archives for having us on this placement; we’ve had a fantastic two weeks!

ddechrau’r ail wythnos ar Gynllun Lleoliadau Treftadaeth Go Wales, buom yn gweithio ar wefan Archifau Richard Burton, ac fe wnaethom awgrymu newidiadau i’w chynllun a sut gellid ei gwneud yn haws i’w defnyddio. Aeth ein canllaw gwe ar y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf yn fyw, gan roi cipolwg ar sut effeithiodd y rhyfel ar fywydau cynulleidfaoedd plwyf Eglwys Dewi Sant.

Trwy gydol yr wythnos buom yn rhestru papurau undeb Conffederasiwn Llafur Haearn a Dur, a daethom i wybod fod yr undeb nid yn unig yn cynrychioli’r aelodau er mwyn gwella’r amodau gweithio, roedden nhw hefyd yn rhoi llais i’r aelodau mewn gwrandawiadau tribiwnlys. Daeth yn amlwg fod undeb yr ISTC yn cwmpasu llawer mwy nag y tybiwyd i ddechrau, a bod ganddyn nhw gysylltiadau ers amser maith ag undebau eraill. Mae’r papurau y gwnaethom eu harchwilio yn cynnwys gohebiaethau, cylchlythyrau, apeliadau tribiwnlys meddygol, cofnodion, mynegeion canghennau ac adroddiadau archwilio, ymhlith llawer o bethau eraill.

Ganol yr wythnos aethom ar daith maes i Archifau Morgannwg yng Nghaerdydd. Cawsom ein tywys gan warchodwr, a daethom i wybod am yr amodau sydd eu hangen i gynnal eu harchif a adeiladwyd yn bwrpasol. Cawsom hefyd weld y gadwraeth drosom ein hunain drwy ddilyn gwaith y gwirfoddolwyr a’r staff yn eu stiwdio gadwraeth. Fe wnaethom fwynhau’r daith hon yn arbennig gan ei bod wedi dangos ochr wahanol ar fyd treftadaeth, ac oherwydd gwybodaeth arbenigol y staff roedden nhw’n gallu cyflwyno’r ddisgyblaeth ddiddorol hon i ni.

Hoffem ddiolch i holl staff Archifau Richard Burton am eu caredigrwydd yn ystod y lleoliad hwn; rydym wedi cael pythefnos i’w chofio!
