Vacation borrowing
Vacation loans start on Tuesday 13th June 2017, items will be due for return on Wednesday 4th  October 2017.

Using other libraries
If you have gone home for the Summer holiday and would like to use the library of your local university, we have a guide to using the SCONUL Access scheme (PDF) which will help you arrange access during the vacation. You can also contact us at the Issue Desk here about other borrowing schemes that exist – details are on our Visitors’ Information page.

Many of Swansea University’s library resources can be accessed from home – for these you will need to login with your Swansea University email address and usual password.

E-Books
All our e-books can be found via iFind, the library catalogue. Search on a general term (e.g. marketing, nursing etc.) and then apply the Format options for “Full Text Online” and “Books” listed on the left-hand side of the screen. Click on any title to get the “Online” access link to the e-book.

Our e-books are available via three main websites: dawsonera, EBSCO and Proquest Ebook Central. Books can be accessed online at any time or there are limited download options available: dawsonera allows downloading for 1-2 days and Proquest Ebook Central gives a 14 day download period (Adobe Digital Editions required). We have over 106,000 titles on Proquest Ebook Central – access the site directly to search across the full text of the collection and build your own online bookshelf for easy access to your favourite titles.

Journal Articles
To search for a specific journal article or an article on a topic, use iFind, the library catalogue (articles & more) and enter the surname of the author and a few words from the title of the article (not the title of the journal) in the box. “Full text available” will appear beside those results where you can access the full text article.

If you are using iFind off-campus, you will be prompted to log in with your Swansea University email address and password the first time you submit a search.

If you are using Google Scholar, make sure you set up the link to Swansea University’s subscriptions – we have a guide here (PDF) on how to do this.

If you encounter problems accessing e-journals, try our troubleshooting guide (PDF) which describes some of the most common solutions.

Other Resources
Our Library Guides pages also have information on other e-resources available to you such as newspaper databases. Information about theses can also be found on our library website – full text downloads can be available via the Ethos service for some UK theses.

Our e-books supplied by dawsonera can now be accessed on mobile devices. They are still subject to the publisher’s loan period of 1 or 2 days but repeat downloads are possible. Mobile access requires the free Adobe Reader app (available for Android and iPad/iPhone).

All our e-books can be found in the library catalogue. This link will take you to a sample search for e-books on presentations. As long as you keep the “Retain my current filters” box checked, you can search on other topics and the results will be limited to e-books. Check the link to see where the e-book is from : dawsonera and ebrary are our two main suppliers (ebrary also has a mobile app).

We have updated our E-Books guide (PDF) which covers all three of our E-Book suppliers and has more information on mobile access. If you have any problems with using our e-books (or any comments on the service), please let us know via the usual email: library@swansea.ac.uk

E-lyfrau ar gael ar declynnau symudol

Bellach, mae modd cael gafael ar e-lyfrau a ddarperir gan dawsonera ar declynnau symudol.  Mae cyfnod benthyca’r cyhoeddwr, sef 1 neu 2 ddiwrnod, yn dal yn weithredol, ond mae modd lawrlwytho’r deunydd eto wedyn.  I gael mynediad o declyn symudol, mae angen yr app Adobe Reader, sydd ar gael am ddim ar gyfer teclynnau Android ac iPad/iPhone.

Cewch ddod o hyd i’r cyfan o’n he-lyfrau yng nghatalog y llyfrgell. Bydd y ddolen hon yn mynd â chi i chwiliad enghreifftiol am e-lyfrau ar gyflwyniadau. Cyhyd â’ch bod yn ticio’r blwch “Cadw fy hidlwyr cyfredol”, cewch chwilio am bynciau eraill, a chyfyngir y canlyniadau i e-lyfrau. Cewch edrych ar y ddolen i weld pwy sy’n darparu’r e-lyfr: dawsonera ac ebrary yw ein dau brif gyflenwr (mae gan ebrary app symudol hefyd).

Rydym wedi diweddaru ein llawlyfr e-lyfrau, sy’n cynnwys y cyfan o’r tri chwmni sy’n darparu e-lyfrau i ni, ac sydd â rhagor o wybodaeth am gael mynediad trwy declyn symudol. Os oes gyda chi unrhyw broblem o ran defnyddio’n he-lyfrau (neu unrhyw sylwadau ar y gwasanaeth), cysylltwch â ni yn y cyfeiriad arferol: library@abertawe.ac.uk

Welsh libraries are giving you the chance to win a Kobo Glo E-reader, just tell them, in 100 words or less, about your favourite summer holiday book.

All libraries in Wales are now offering e-books for free and there are over 6000 books available to download – fiction titles, biographies and real life stories, children’s books, and a range of business and reference books on subjects from computing to the arts.

Welsh Libraries offer FREE e-books which you can lend for up to 3 weeks at a time.
The e-books service even allows you to reserve an e-book if it is unavailable and, if you provide an email address, you will be alerted as soon as the title becomes available. The service is 24/7, so great for those late night readers who need a new book.

Thanks to everyone who filled out our ebook survey during the recent Module Fair, we had 335 completed forms.  The survey revealed some interesting facts about your views on ebooks:

  • 50% of you have never used ebooks before.
  • 81% of those who had used ebooks before liked using them.
  • The most popular device for reading ebooks on was a laptop.

If you would like to see what ebooks you have access to as part of your studies here at Swansea University please look at our Library catalogue, iFind Discover, type in the name of the book you are looking for and see if it has an online link.  Whether you are studying Law, Nursing, Medicine, Business, Childhood Studies or any other subject, we have ebooks available for you to use.

Congratulations to Sherrin Gotru, a biochemistry and genetics student who won the Kindle which we were giving away in the Module Fair.  Sherrin told us “Ebooks are a lot more practical, I don’t have to carry loads of books around with me.” Congratulations also go to Caroline Sandbakken who won our runner up prize, which was a library goodie bag.
