As part of the GO Wales Heritage Placement Scheme, we have spent the week in the Richard Burton Archives. We are both MA students who wanted to get an insight into the preservation and use of archives.

Our week began with an introduction to the site, where we were given a basic induction into archive work. We started by examining the St. David’s Priory collection, extracting entries with research potential regarding World War One. Subsequently, after an introduction to cataloguing, we were given the task of working with an uncatalogued collection, listing the Iron and Steel Trade Confederation’s union papers. This was an interesting insight into how trade unions improved the working conditions of its members, and helped us to understand archive processes.

Mid-week we were given an introduction to answering enquiries from the general public, students and academics. We also discussed the Archive’s policy towards pest control and the environmental conditions required for the strongroom, in order to preserve its contents. We’ve also been promoting the Archives and the work we’ve been doing, through social media.

Our time so far has banished any misconceptions about the work that goes on in archives and the tasks that archivists undertake. The strongrooms hold a vast wealth of material just waiting to be explored, and we hope that our time here will encourage an interest in not only these diverse collections, but in the brilliant work that goes on in the Richard Burton Archives itself.

Lisa and Kath

Fel rhan o Gynllun Lleoliadau Treftadaeth Go Wales, rydym wedi treulio’r wythnos yn Archifau Richard Burton. Mae’r ddwy ohonom yn fyfyrwyr MA ac roeddem yn awyddus i wybod sut mae cadw a defnyddio archifau.

Dechreuodd ein hwythnos gyda chyflwyniad i’r safle, lle cawsom sesiwn gynefino sylfaenol i waith archifo. I ddechrau arni fe wnaethom archwilio casgliad Priordy Dewi Sant, gan dynnu cofnodion gyda photensial ymchwil ynglŷn â’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf. Wedyn, yn dilyn cyflwyniad i gatalogio, cawsom y dasg o weithio â chasgliad nad oedd wedi’i gatalogio, yn rhestru papurau undeb y Cydffederasiwn Llafur Haearn a Dur. Roedd hyn yn ddiddorol o ran sut bu’r undebau llafur yn gwella amodau gweithio ei haelodau, ac fe helpodd ni i ddeall y broses archifau.

Ganol yr wythnos cawsom gyflwyniad yn ymwneud ag ateb ymholiadau gan y cyhoedd, myfyrwyr ac academyddion. Hefyd fe drafodom bolisi’r Archif at reoli plâu a’r amodau amgylcheddol sydd eu hangen ar gyfer ystafell ddiogel, er mwyn cadw ei chynnwys. Rydym hefyd wedi bod yn hyrwyddo’r Archifau a’r gwaith rydym wedi bod yn ei wneud drwy’r cyfryngau cymdeithasol.

Mae ein hamser yma hyd yn hyn wedi cael gwared ar unrhyw gamsyniad ynglŷn â’r gwaith sy’n cael ei wneud yn yr archifau a’r tasgau mae archifwyr yn mynd i’r afael â hwy. Mae’r ystafelloedd diogelu yn cadw cyfoeth helaeth o ddeunyddiau sy’n disgwyl i gael eu harchwilio, ac rydym yn gobeithio y bydd eich cyfnod yma yn denu diddordeb pobl nid yn unig yn y casgliadau amrywiol hyn, ond yng ngwaith Archifau Richard Burton ei hunan.

Happy St Patricks Day! We’re used to seeing pictures of the fantastic parades staged across the World, but did you know Wales has also had its share of celebrating the Irish patron saint. This photograph from the South Wales Coalfield Collection, housed in the University’s Richard Burton Archives, shows a St Patrick’s Day Procession in Tonypandy, 1911.

Dydd Gŵyl Padrig hapus! Rydym yn gyfarwydd â gweld lluniau o’r gorymdeithiau gwych sy’n cael eu cynnal ledled y byd, ond oeddech chi’n gwybod fod Cymru hefyd wedi cynnal dathliadau i gofio am nawddsant Iwerddon? Mae’r ffotograff hwn o Gasgliad Maes Glo De Cymru, sydd yn Archifau Richard Burton y Brifysgol, yn dangos Gorymdaith Dydd Gŵyl Padrig yn Nhonypandy, 1911.

Archives projects win two prizes for Swansea

Two projects which involved research in the Richard Burton Archives at Swansea University have won prizes in the national Tell us Your Story competition, organised by Archives Wales. Entrants had to describe their experience using archives, and explain how it helped them with their project.

Christian Erbacher from the University of Bergen in Norway visited the Richard Burton Archives to use the Rush Rhees collection. Rhees was a philosopher, principally known as a student, friend and literary executor of the philosopher Wittgenstein. Rhees taught philosophy at Swansea University from 1940 to 1966. Christian said: “I have been travelling a thousand miles to the Richard Burton Archives, and it was worth the effort. Each time I open a new folder it is as if I set a foot on a new land.”

Sion Durham is a history undergraduate at Swansea University. He used the archives in his second year for a new course, ‘Researching and Re-telling the Past: Swansea Student Union History Project’. This course, funded by the Swansea Academy for Learning and Teaching (SALT), involved students being taught entirely through using archive material.

Sion said that “Swansea University has its own unique history”, and he was able to explore the history of the Student Union through countless sources which are in the archive, including student newspapers, minutes of meetings and photographs. “What makes an archive is the people who run these services”, he said, describing the Richard Burton Archives as “an outstanding place to go and research”.

Prosiect archifau’n cipio dwy wobr i Abertawe

Mae dau brosiect a fu’n cynnwys ymchwil yn Archifau Richard Burton ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe wedi ennill gwobrau yn y gystadleuaeth Dywedwch eich Stori Wrthym, a drefnir gan Archifau Cymru. Roedd rhaid i ymgeiswyr ddisgrifio eu profiad gan ddefnyddio archifau, ac esbonio sut y gwnaeth hyn eu helpu gyda’u prosiect.

Ymwelodd Christian Erbacher o Brifysgol Bergen yn Norwy ag Archifau Richard Burton i ddefnyddio’r casgliad Rush Rhees. Roedd Rhees yn athronydd, a oedd yn adnabyddus yn bennaf fel myfyriwr, ffrind ac ysgutor llenyddol yr athronydd Wittgenstein. Bu Rhees yn addysgu athroniaeth ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe o 1940 tan 1966. Meddai Christian: “Rydw i wedi teithio mil o filltiroedd i gyrraedd Archifau Richard Burton, ac roedd hi’n werth yr ymdrech. Bob tro y bu i mi agor ffolder newydd roedd hi fel petawn i’n gosod troed ar dir newydd.”

Mae Siôn Durham yn fyfyriwr hanes israddedig ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe. Bu’n defnyddio’r archifau yn ei ail flwyddyn ar gyfer cwrs newydd. ‘Ymchwilio ac Ailddweud y Gorffennol: Prosiect Hanes Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Abertawe’. Roedd y prosiect hwn yn addysgu myfyrwyr yn gyfan gwbl drwy ddefnyddio deunydd archif.

Dywedodd Siôn fod gan Brifysgol Abertawe “ei hanes unigryw ei hun”, a bu modd iddo archwilio hanes Undeb y Myfyrwyr drwy ffynonellau di-rif yn yr archif, gan gynnwys papurau newydd myfyrwyr, cofnodion cyfarfodydd a ffotograffau. “Yr hyn sy’n gwneud archif yw’r bobl sy’n rhedeg y gwasanaethau hyn”, meddai, gan ddisgrifio Archifau Richard Burton fel “lle eithriadol i fynd i wneud gwaith ymchwil”.

Celebrating Swansea’s Sporting Tradition

In the build up to Varsity the Archives team look back at the very first season of sport at Swansea University. The Archives were delighted to receive this wonderful university cap, which was awarded to David Thomas and dates from the earliest years of the University. David was awarded full colours for Association Football, 1921-1922, and there is a photo of him as part of the team in the ‘The Undergrad’, the college magazine, in 1921. We’re looking forward to seeing photos of Swansea’s Varsity victories in 2013!

Dathlu Traddodiad Chwaraeon Abertawe

Wrth edrych ymlaen at Farsity mae’r tîm Archifau’n edrych yn ôl at y tymor chwaraeon cyntaf un ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe. Roedd tîm yr Archifau wrth eu bodd i dderbyn y cap prifysgol hyfryd hwn, a roddwyd i David Thomas ac sy’n dyddio o flynyddoedd cynharaf y Brifysgol. Gwobrwywyd David ag anrhydeddau llawn ar gyfer Pêl-droed y Gymdeithas, 1921-1922, a cheir llun ohono fel rhan o’r tîm yn ‘The Undergrad’, cylchgrawn y coleg, ym 1921. Rydym yn edrych ymlaen at weld lluniau o fuddugoliaethau Farsity Abertawe yn 2013!

International Women’s Day and the Archives

Celebrating International Women’s Day – did you know that women in Swansea were heavily involved in campaigning for women’s rights? Did you know the Archives hold material relating to the Women’s Freedom League? The Kirkland collection contains various papers of Margaret Kirkland, who was a member of the Women’s Freedom League, Swansea Branch. The WFL was a militant organisation and came into existence in 1907 following a split within the Women’s Social and Political Union. The objective of the WFL was ‘to secure for Women the Parliamentary Vote as it is, or may be, granted to men.’ In 1918 the vote was finally given to women aged 30 and above and in 1928 the vote was extended to women under 30. The WFL then devoted itself to other national and international issues of women’s rights and equality with men.

Archifau a Diwrnod Rhyngwladol Menywod

Dathlu Diwrnod Rhyngwladol Menywod – a oeddech chi’n gwybod bod yr oedd menywod yn Abertawe yn rhan fawr o’r ymgyrch am hawliau i fenywod? Oeddech chi’n gwybod bod gan yr Archifau ddeunydd yn ymwneud â Chynghrair Ryddid y Menywod? Mae casgliad Kirkland yn cynnwys amryw bapurau Margaret Kirkland, a oedd yn aelod o Gynghrair Ryddid y Menywod, Cangen Abertawe. Roedd y Gynghrair yn sefydliad milwriaethus a ddaeth i fodolaeth ym 1907 yn dilyn hollt o fewn Undeb Gymdeithasol a Gwleidyddol y Menywod. Amcan y gynghrair oedd ‘sicrhau’r Bleidlais Seneddol i Fenywod fel y mae, neu fel y gellid ei rhoi, i ddynion.’ Ym 1918 rhoddwyd y bleidlais o’r diwedd i fenywod 30 oed ac yn hŷn ac ym 1928 estynnwyd y bleidlais i fenywod dan 30. Gwnaeth y Gynghrair yna ymroi ei hun i faterion cenedlaethol a rhyngwladol eraill yn ymwneud â hawliau i fenywod a chydraddoldeb â dynion.

Glad Tidings of Struggle and Strife

For a different take on the season of goodwill there is a talk at the National Waterfront Museum on Saturday 15 December. ‘The History of Protest through the Medium of the Christmas Card’ is being given by Llew Smith, former Labour MP for Blaenau Gwent, and ties in with the exhibition at Newport Art Gallery of the unique collection of ‘protest’ Christmas cards that he and his late wife, Pam, amassed. The Archives lent several items for the exhibition:

  • ‘Hunger March’ Christmas card
  • Christmas card from the Co-operative Union, 1935
  • Christmas card from the Women’s Co-operative Guild, 1949

The exhibition runs until 12 January 2013, and if you’d like to look at the book which accompanies it, ‘Glad Tidings of Struggle and Strife: A history of protest Christmas cards’, there’s a copy in the Archives.

From Pandy to Japan

The Archives were pleased to welcome five Japanese scholars visiting Swansea for a one-day conference on Raymond Williams. A small display of items from the Raymond Williams Collection led to a lively discussion between the company – Fuhito Endo, Yasuhiro Kondo, Shintaro Kono, Takashi Onuki, Ryota Nishi and Daniel Williams, Director of the Richard Burton Centre for the Study of Wales. We hope to see these visitors again soon!

The papers of the renowned cultural critic and writer Raymond Williams (1921-1988) range from the creative works of his childhood through his time at Cambridge and World War Two, to his later academic life. The collection covers many subjects and disciplines including culture, drama, criticism, politics, communications, media, literature, sociology, language, technology, history, war and ‘The Bomb’, class (particularly working class), education (particularly adult education), region and geography, Cambridge and academia. For more information see the catalogue or contact the Archives.

O’r Pandy i Japan

Roedd yr Archifau’n falch o groesawu pump ysgolhaig Japaneaidd a oedd yn ymweld ag Abertawe am gynhadledd un diwrnod ar Raymond Williams. Gwnaeth arddangosfa fach o eitemau o gasgliad Raymond Williams arwain at drafodaeth fywiog rhwng Fuhito Endo, Yasuhiro Kondo, Shintaro Kono, Takashi Onuki, Ryota Nishi a Daniel Williams, Cyfarwyddwr Canolfan Richard Burton ar gyfer Astudio Cymru. Rydym yn gobeithio y byddwn yn gweld yr ymwelwyr hyn eto’n fuan!

Mae papurau’r llenor a’r beirniad diwylliannol adnabyddus Raymond Williams (1921-1988) yn amrywio o weithiau creadigol yn ystod ei blentyndod i’w amser yng Nghaergrawnt a’r Ail Ryfel Byd, i’w fywyd academaidd hwyrach. Mae’r casgliad yn ymdrin â llawer o bynciau a disgyblaethau’n cynnwys diwylliant, drama, beirniadaeth, gwleidyddiaeth, cyfathrebu, y cyfryngau, llenyddiaeth, cymdeithaseg, iaith, technoleg, hanes, rhyfel a’r ‘Bom’, dosbarth (yn enwedig y dosbarth gweithiol), addysg (yn enwedig addysg oedolion), rhanbarthau a daearyddiaeth, Caergrawnt a’r byd academaidd.
